Casa Maria tries to fight redevelopment

The single square-mile “Pueblo within a City” is best known for its Mexican restaurants and its population living below poverty. For forty years, a soup kitchen called Casa Maria has been helping out homeless communities. Its hardest-working volunteer, Glenda Avalos, who is also part of the Barrio Neighborhood Coalition, is working to address the immediate needs of locally displaced people.
