Last week a federal judge dropped the last remaining charges against border rights activist Scott Warren. This ended the final case against Warren, who last fall fought against two felony charges. The No More Deaths activist was acquitted in November on charges of harboring and concealing undocumented migrants. Warren argued that he was providing humanitarian aid to people in need in the desert.
A team of students from the UA Schools of Journalism and Anthropology followed the highly publicized case and examined the issue of criminalization of activism in the Tucson region. The results of their investigation are included in Episode 1 of “Against the Wall.” The podcast episode titled, “Deterrent,” includes interviews with long time Tucson activist, Rev. John Fife, who was arrested in the 1980s on similar charges, as well as current members of border humanitarian groups.
Meredith O’Neil (Executive Producer) and Claude Akins host the episode. Other members of the reporting team include: Rocky Baier, Reed Battles, Makenzie Carolan, Sascha Fruehauf, Audry Herran, Aimee Rodríguez, and David Thalenberg.
